Get to know me a little better

Hi there, I’m Malou and I’m a Danish Web Designer, who has had an interest in technology from a very young age. I always threw myself into any creative outlet I could get my hands on, and when we got a home computer, a whole new world opened up.

I started playing around with video editing of my dance team, and later on some comedy sketches with a friend. As I got a little older, the beginning of social media started, and I got my coding debut creating things for my MySpace page – because I was in a band, and we played music, so at that time MySpace was the place to be! I quickly started having a lot of fun with this, and the opportunity to create things with code, was yet a new door opened.

Now I didn’t always think I’d be designing and building websites for a career. As a matter of fact, my young self was pretty determined, that one day I would be an animator for Disney. I know, oddly specific for a child, but hey what can you do! As you imagine that didn’t turn out to be the case, but as I got older I started to understand what it was that drove me to wanting to be an animator, it was the aspect of storytelling. I truly believe we as humans are bound by great stories, more often than not we will find ourselves rooting for the hero in a story. I realized that stories are all around, and can even be used to great results when creating websites, if you have a good brand story, people will remember you better, simply because stories engage us.

Since getting my AP Degree in Multimedia Design & Communications, I’ve tried my hand at several types of setups working with design. I started out as an in-house designer for a startup, here I got to play around with a lot of different design disciplines, for both print and web. My skillset was wide, and I enjoyed learning a lot of different things. However, I also started to get an idea of what I really LOVED working with, and that was whenever I got to create and build anything on our website.

To explore this a bit more, I started working freelance as a web designer as a side quest, to see if I would still enjoy working with web design, if it was the only thing I did. It turned out, that the love was strong! I enjoyed working as a freelancer even more, because I could build my own process about how I create websites.

After some time I switched from being in-house to working at agencies, where I specifically only worked with creating websites, webshops and branding for the clients. I found that this was when I was in my element, but I was missing the strategy part of my design process, and I longed for being able to help the clients actually reach the goals they hoped to achieve with their websites. Now I’m not saying that agencies don’t do strategy, but it was not something I personally was involved with.

When I’m not pushing pixels around, I use my downtime playing video games and guitar, watching sports, and binging my latest obsession on any given streaming service. Now let me elaborate a bit for those interested!

Video games

I love playing video games, for me it’s a nice way to relax after a long day at work. I’m both a PC and console kinda person, as I enjoy some of the exclusive console titles. If I had to pick a favorite game at the top of my head, I’d say that ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ comes to mind!

Music has always been a very important part of my life, anything from playing, listening and dancing to it. I’ve played the guitar since I was 6 years old, and also started playing the keyboard for a couple of years. However, the guitar is my favorite instrument. I like to relax and just play some tunes to zone out, whenever I’m in the mood.

I’m a HUGE sports fan. I watch so many different types of sports, that it’s basically my TV schedule on the weekends. My big three are the following:

  • Football – Liverpool FC
  • American football – Tennessee Titans
  • Basketball – Toronto Raptors

I also like watching MMA, Formula 1, and tennis. So yeah, did I mention I’m a huge sports fan?

Binging & pop culture

Like any other person, I have a subscription for one too many streaming services. I mostly watch, fantasies, dramas, comedies, and animation. I love talking about a good film or show with people, and get a bit too excited about storytelling techniques that are being used. Foreshadowing rules!

As for pop culture, I’m no stranger to superheroes. I consume a lot of both Marvel & DC, both the movies but also the comics. My obsession with superheroes began from a young age, when I was out grocery shopping with my dad. I found this X-Men comic, which I was immediately drawn to, and my dad decided to buy it for me, and so it began! To this day my favorite superhero is still Kitty Pryde.

If I had to describe myself in 3 words, it would be: Empathic, openminded, and riant.

Now if you’re wondering how I would fit with your team, I’d advice you to follow this link to my Myers-Briggs Personality Type: ENFP (Campaigner).
